Bosch describes E23 as a drain-pump issue that can involve blockage, clogging or a fault. Cleaning the filter does not prove the pump and its operation are healthy.
Bosch US dishwasher code guidance for the displayed code. Match the full E-Nr and its own manual; the same short number in another appliance category, market or generation must not be assumed equivalent.
Stop and isolate power before permitted user maintenance, and let water cool. Watch for sharp debris. Do not reach blindly into a sump, open electrical panels or use drain-opening chemicals. Stay clear of water near electrical equipment.
Follow the drain path
Check the parts of this route that your manual permits you to access. Note where water flows and where you cannot confirm it. Do not open covers or components that require service access.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Filter clear | Only one part of the drain path checked. |
| Code immediate versus after attempted drain | Record timing for service. |
| E23 persists | Model-specific pump/path diagnosis. |
Code-specific checks
List the checks actually completed
Separate “filter cleaned” from “pump cover inspected” and “external drain checked.” These are different observations. Record whether standing water remains, whether it returns later, and whether E23 appears immediately or after an attempted drain. Do not turn a list of assumptions into a service history.
Keep access model-specific
Use only the exact owner manual’s permitted cleaning access after disconnecting power and allowing water to cool. Sharp fragments can remain below the filter. Do not reach blindly into the sump or copy a pump-cover removal method from another Bosch revision. A difficult or inaccessible cover is a reason to stop, not pry harder.
Do not use rotation as proof
An observation that something appears able to turn does not demonstrate correct powered operation or rule out a fault. Likewise, a clear filter is not a failed-pump diagnosis. Those limits explain why parts Q&A often cannot settle a returning E23 without matched technical checks.
Escalate with distinctions preserved
Bosch’s E23 route calls for support. Give the complete E-Nr, code timing, water outcome and which owner-maintenance steps were performed. E24 and E25 can also involve drainage but have different meanings; do not substitute one code’s instructions for another. Include any previous replacement-part history.
If the warning returns
Documented maintenance complete + E23 persists → stop speculative parts work and seek matched diagnosis.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
