Bosch US defines E6160 as a PowerControl lower-spray-arm reference-position fault and directs the owner to support. It is different from simply choosing the wrong cleaning zones in the app.
Bosch US dishwasher code guidance for the displayed code. Match the full E-Nr and its own manual; the same short number in another appliance category, market or generation must not be assumed equivalent.
Stop and isolate power before permitted user maintenance, and let water cool. Watch for sharp debris. Do not reach blindly into a sump, open electrical panels or use drain-opening chemicals. Stay clear of water near electrical equipment.
Compare the behavior
E6160 reports a PowerControl reference-position problem. Choosing different cleaning zones in the app does not prove that this fault is resolved. Give Bosch the full code and model details.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Wrong saved zone map, no code | Use PowerControl configuration guidance. |
| E6160 displayed | Reference-position service route. |
| Only part of E61 code remembered | Photograph full display before routing. |
Code-specific checks
Record the exact display
Photograph the full code, including punctuation, and the complete E-Nr. Note whether it followed loading, a cleaning task or an earlier repair. A partial recollection such as “an E61 code” can be confused with a drain-related message, so keep every digit.
Compare configuration with fault status
The app’s PowerControl zones describe where cleaning is emphasized. A reference-position warning reports a different issue. Changing the zone map repeatedly is not a documented calibration procedure and should not be presented as one.
Limit observations to safe loading context
When stopped and cool, note a utensil or dish obviously projecting into the lower-rack spray area. Correct ordinary loading interference without forcing the controlled arm or removing the mechanism. An unobstructed-looking rack does not prove the reference-position system is working; it simply gives support a useful observation.
Use model-specific service
The manufacturer directs support for this code. Give the model suffix, code photograph, selected program and any recent owner-maintenance work. Do not rotate the arm against resistance, bypass a position sensor or use a guessed service-mode sequence from another model. A factory reset that erases preferences is not evidence of recalibration.
If the warning returns
Exact E6160 → safe loading observation → Bosch support; no forced arm movement or undocumented calibration.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
