FF is freeze detection on the LG top-load family covered by the guidance. Cold conditions can affect supply and drain paths. A washer unable to drain after freezing is not automatically a failed drain pump.
LG top-load washers covered by the FF support article. Front-load and SideKick thawing and drain-access procedures differ; no universal hot-water quantity is prescribed here.
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.
Follow the drain path
Check the parts of this route that your manual permits you to access. Note where water flows and where you cannot confirm it. Do not open covers or components that require service access.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Cold exposure plus no inlet water | Assess the supply path. |
| Water present but cannot leave after freezing | Assess the drain path. |
| Thawed but repeated codes/leaks | Needs diagnosis; not automatically ice. |
Code-specific checks
Use the weather and code sequence
Record whether the machine was exposed to freezing conditions and whether it first failed to fill or to drain. An IE event points attention toward supply; an OE event points toward drainage. These observations locate a path, but a code alone does not prove there is ice rather than a separate fault.
Prefer safe warming to forced operation
LG notes that waiting for the cold period to end and natural thawing can be appropriate. Do not keep starting a frozen machine. Avoid boiling water, open flames, improvised electrical heaters or tools used to chip ice inside hoses. If pipes are leaking or fittings appear damaged, stop and obtain plumbing/appliance help.
Test only after the path is restored
Follow the exact model’s thawing directions if undertaking permitted maintenance. Check accessible connections for leaks before normal operation. LG’s guide uses a drain/spin check followed by rinse-and-spin to check recovery. If water still cannot leave, or FF/IE/OE returns after thawing, arrange assessment rather than repeatedly resetting the code.
If the warning returns
Frozen conditions → stop forced starts and thaw safely per manual
Leaks/damage → professional help
Persistent failure after thaw → service.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
