F0 E5 means the load is unbalanced or too large on the covered top-load washers. Moving the same oversized mass around may not solve it: reduce the load as needed, then choose a fabric-appropriate cycle.
Maytag top-load F0E5 guidance. Front-load machines have a separately documented F0 E5 page; do not transfer top-load lid/control details to them.
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.
Compare the behavior
A repeat with a meaningfully changed load is a diagnostic comparison; repeated starts with the same load provide little new evidence.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Only one bulky load fails | Change the load arrangement/size and appropriate cycle. |
| Washed; only extraction remains | Use documented Drain & Spin. |
| Several suitable loads fail | Seek installation/service assessment. |
Code-specific checks
Redistribute versus reduce
A single bulky item and a tightly packed mixed load create different balancing problems. Let the basket stop and the lid release before arranging clothing. If the load still cannot move freely, taking some items out is more informative than repeating the same redistribution.
Recover the correct task
Maytag allows pausing and rearranging when the cycle can be paused. When the wash has already finished and the only remaining task is water extraction, its guidance allows Drain & Spin after rearranging. That avoids restarting a full wash unnecessarily. Use only cycles and load types permitted by the model guide.
When it is no longer a one-load issue
Record whether F0 E5 occurs with several suitable loads or only one article. Repeated faults across appropriately loaded cycles warrant installation/leveling and service assessment. A balance code alone does not identify which suspension or drive part should be ordered, and it is not permission to bypass lid protection.
If the warning returns
Reduce or redistribute safely
Persistent failures on suitable loads need model-specific evaluation.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
