MHW8630HW Optimal Dose: Detergent Settings Before Service

Fixlume editorialSource check: October 16, 2026Maytag · washers
The short answer

The MHW8630HW Optimal Dose system meters liquid HE detergent from a reservoir. Check the selected dispensing mode, detergent type and concentration setting before interpreting reservoir level or adding a second full dose.

Models covered

MHW8630HW equipped with Optimal Dose. Its bleach and softener compartments are not interchangeable with the liquid HE reservoir. Use the full model’s supplied Use & Care guide.

Before you begin
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.

Compare the behavior

Match the documented control, cycle or feature before interpreting the result. The comparison below keeps normal model behavior separate from an unresolved fault.

Model-specific checks

Identify the compartment

The model has a bulk detergent feature; it does not require a new full detergent dose for every load when bulk dispensing is in use. Match the reservoir to the Optimal Dispense diagram. Laundry packets and boosters belong only where the model instructions permit them, not inside the bulk liquid tank.

Do not double-dose the test load

For a useful comparison, keep the detergent mode consistent. Adding a separate full dose while bulk delivery is enabled makes wash results and reservoir movement harder to interpret. If changing to a different dosing method, follow the guide’s instructions for that method first.

Match concentration to the bottle

Maytag explains that the concentration selection must match the detergent. An incorrect selection changes how much liquid is metered, so a slowly falling reservoir is not enough to establish a failed pump. Keep a note of concentration and dispensing mode when comparing consecutive suitable loads.

If detergent still remains

Inspect only the removable parts and cleaning access described in the owner guide. Do not pour bleach, drain cleaner or improvised solvents through the detergent path. If settings and permitted cleaning do not resolve the problem, provide service with the exact mode, detergent concentration and whether the drawer or another compartment is filling with water.

What to record next

Bulk detergent quantity and a softener siphon complaint are different observations. Recording the affected compartment makes the next diagnostic question much more precise.

When to stop and get help

Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
