dET means the detergent dispenser cartridge is not detected. Whirlpool says it can be ignored when you intentionally use single-load detergent doses.
Select Whirlpool front-load washers with an Optimal Dispense cartridge and this exact message; not every bulk dispenser has the same cartridge or code.
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.
Compare the behavior
The same display can be informational in one dosing workflow and significant in another. That distinction avoids unnecessary cartridge replacement while preventing an owner from assuming a detergent-filled but unrecognized cartridge must be working.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Single-load dosing intentional | Manufacturer says dET can be ignored |
| Automatic cartridge dosing intended | Check seating and complete closure |
| Correct fit but repeated dET | Model-specific dispenser diagnosis |
Code-specific checks
Decide whether a cartridge should be active
Start with how you intended to dose this wash. If you chose a single-load dose, the missing-cartridge notice is not automatically a wash-stopping fault. If you expected automatic cartridge dosing, the message matters because the control has not recognized the supply you intended to use.
Check fit before blaming electronics
Ensure the correct cartridge is inserted properly and the drawer closes completely. Use its owner manual to identify orientation and permitted cleaning. Do not force a mismatched cartridge or tape a drawer sensor. A full reservoir is not evidence it is recognized.
Persistent detection failure
Record whether the message changes after a normal reseat and full drawer closure. If automatic detection does not return, contact service with the exact model and cartridge information. Do not add a manual dose and leave uncertain automatic dosing enabled; the aim is one deliberate detergent source.
If the warning returns
Intentional single dose: follow that model’s method
Automatic dose: restore recognition or seek help before relying on the tank.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
