Maytag says L2 can indicate low or missing supply voltage that prevents heating while the drum continues running. Drum movement therefore does not prove the electric dryer has the power needed to heat.
Electric Maytag dryers using the documented L2 code. Do not apply electric two-line supply checks to a gas dryer or assume a displayed code is a confirmed failed heater.
Stop for smoke, burning smells, abnormal heat or repeated breaker trips. Let the dryer cool before cleaning. Do not expose wiring, bypass interlocks or work on gas components. If gas is smelled, leave and call the utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Trace the supply and the reported state
The key information is that motor operation and full heating supply are different observations. That keeps a power problem from being converted into an unsupported heater replacement.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Drum turns; L2 present | Supply fault remains possible. |
| L2 clears but returns | Message clearing did not fix its cause. |
| Breaker trips again or connection overheats | Leave off; arrange electrical assessment. |
Code-specific checks
Why tumbling does not settle it
The manufacturer explains that an electric dryer’s motor and heater can be affected differently by a supply interruption. Record whether L2 appeared after installation, a move or a power outage. Clearing the message only changes the display; it does not verify the supply.
Keep owner checks at the panel
If safe and permitted for the household, check the identified dryer breaker arrangement. Maytag’s residential guidance describes a five-minute circuit power cycle followed by observation. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again. A hot plug, scorched connection, burning odor or repeated trip requires the appliance to remain off.
What belongs to an electrician
Supply measurement, cord-terminal examination and circuit repair require a qualified person. Do not remove the terminal cover or probe an energized receptacle as an owner experiment. Tell the electrician that the dryer tumbles but reports L2; that is more useful than declaring the heating element failed.
If the warning returns
Check only safe household controls; persistent L2 needs supply verification by a qualified electrician or appliance service.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
