PF indicates that a power failure interrupted drying. Maytag says Start can resume the cycle and Power can clear the message; a one-off message after a known outage is different from PF recurring during ordinary operation.
Residential Maytag dryers covered by the linked PF guidance. Commercial-grade support may prescribe a different power-cycle duration; use the exact model’s instructions.
Stop for smoke, burning smells, abnormal heat or repeated breaker trips. Let the dryer cool before cleaning. Do not expose wiring, bypass interlocks or work on gas components. If gas is smelled, leave and call the utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Trace the supply and the reported state
Treating the message as an event record first avoids turning an expected outage interruption into an unsupported parts diagnosis.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Single PF after confirmed outage | Clear/resume per model guide and observe. |
| PF with no known outage | Record recurrence and obtain diagnosis. |
| Trips, heat or damage | Leave off pending qualified assessment. |
Code-specific checks
Read the interruption before clearing the display
Note whether household power actually failed and whether other appliances were affected. Maytag also notes that interaction during the first ten seconds after power returns can cause the display. Wait for startup rather than pressing several controls immediately. Check the load and appliance before resuming. The manufacturer’s residential support describes a five-minute breaker power-down after a recent outage and a short observation after restoration. Use household breakers only if safely accessible and correctly identified; this does not authorize opening wiring covers.
A repeating PF is a different task
If PF returns without a known outage, note when it occurs and whether the display or household lights flicker. Do not assume a control board is defective. Repeated trips, overheating, odor or a visibly damaged connection mean stop using the appliance and obtain qualified electrical or appliance help.
If the warning returns
Resume only if operation is normal; recurring or unsafe power symptoms need qualified investigation.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
