Hold the Control Lock control continuously for three seconds. The documented countdown is 3, 2, 1. A locked control panel and a physically locked door are different conditions; clearing one does not promise that the other will immediately release.
Models covered
MHW5630HW controls illustrated in its Use & Care guide. Match the actual panel and full model suffix; do not apply another model’s dual-purpose key sequence.
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.
Compare the behavior
Match the documented control, cycle or feature before interpreting the result. The comparison below keeps normal model behavior separate from an unresolved fault.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| 3–2–1 finishes | Check whether ordinary controls now respond. |
| No countdown | Confirm the panel label and continuous contact. |
| Controls work, door locked | Investigate the cycle/door state separately. |
Model-specific checks
Use the countdown as feedback
Find the control labeled Control Lock on the panel. Hold the control itself, rather than tapping the printed label repeatedly. Watch whether a complete countdown occurs. A countdown that begins but stops is a different observation from a panel that never recognizes the hold.
What remains usable
The guide permits Start to pause and Power to switch the washer off while the controls are locked. Those responses do not establish that the entire interface is healthy or faulty. After unlocking, make one ordinary cycle selection and check whether the panel responds.
When the door stays closed
A door lock protects an active wash; Control Lock prevents unwanted input. If the display changes but the door stays locked, record the cycle state, remaining water and any full error code. Do not pull against the latch or use a lock bypass. A panel that remains unresponsive after the documented hold needs model-specific service assessment rather than an invented reset combination.
What to record next
The useful test is whether the documented input is recognized, not whether every light goes dark. Keeping panel lock and door lock separate avoids treating normal protection as a failed latch.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
