Whirlpool 1h on the Display: Delay Wash or a Failed Start?

Fixlume editorialSource check: October 16, 2026Whirlpool · washers
Code meaning & immediate answer

On covered front-load models, 1h through 12h identifies Delay Wash. A displayed delay can explain a washer waiting instead of immediately beginning the load.

Whirlpool front-load models whose manuals use hour-style delay displays. It does not decode every number or flashing indicator on every Whirlpool appliance.

Before you begin
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.

Compare the behavior

Identifying the unit matters: an hour-marked delay is a scheduled state, not a diagnostic code. The decisive result is a correctly canceled delay followed by a start attempt, rather than assuming that any quiet washer is broken.

Code-specific checks

Read the suffix and indicator

Record the whole display, including the h and Delay Wash light. One hour of selected delay is different from a wash’s estimated time remaining. Do not treat an h display as an F-code or a failed heater.

Cancel the delay using the exact console

For the front-load consoles illustrated in Whirlpool’s linked help, turning Power off cancels the selected delay. Consult the exact model guide before applying that action to a different interface, then reselect the intended cycle without delay and make one proper start attempt. A dryer or dishwasher delay sequence is not evidence for this washer.

If it returns unexpectedly

Note which button restores the delay and whether the controls otherwise respond. If the correct off selection does not persist, record the model and sequence for support. Waiting many hours or repeatedly unplugging does not establish that the delay control was canceled correctly.

If the warning returns

Delay intentional: let the schedule run

Delay accidental: cancel per model guide

Still no start without delay: follow the new symptom.

When to stop and get help

Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
