Whirlpool Err When Changing a Running Cycle

Fixlume editorialSource check: October 16, 2026Whirlpool · washers
Code meaning & immediate answer

Whirlpool documents Err when a running cycle is changed or modified, or when a start is attempted with the door open. It is not automatically proof of a broken control board.

Whirlpool front-load washers covered by the manufacturer Err help. Do not confuse Err with Er processor messages on older platforms or an F-number code.

Before you begin
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.

Compare the behavior

Err can be a response to a setting that is unavailable while the current cycle is running. If neither documented trigger applies, note the exact control action and display response for support.

Code-specific checks

Match the message to the action

Note whether Err appeared immediately after touching a cycle setting or trying to start. If it followed a prohibited change while running, the failed action may explain the display. A rejected change is different from the washer spontaneously stopping mid-cycle.

Return to a permitted state

Use the exact model’s pause/cancel instructions before changing the cycle. If the start was attempted with the door open, close it normally and follow the supported start action. Do not force the door or assume a control reset overrides the interlock.

If the message has no matching trigger

Record the full code, selected cycle and last control pressed. Manufacturer help allows a five-minute power interruption, but a cleared display cannot certify the panel or lock. Repeated Err without a documented trigger needs exact-model support rather than a guessed board replacement.

If the warning returns

Documented trigger: correct the state

Unexpected recurrence: record evidence and use model-specific service.

When to stop and get help

Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
