The Fabric Softener button changes the rinse; it does not identify a built-in softener dispenser. The WTW5057LW quick guide provides a dispenser-ball method and a manual final-rinse method.

Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.
Compare the behavior
Match the documented control, cycle or feature before interpreting the result. The comparison below keeps normal model behavior separate from an unresolved fault.
| Observed state | Interpretation / next step |
|---|---|
| Fabric Softener light on | Rinse configured for liquid softener; product still needs a supported delivery method |
| Extra Rinse only | Second rinse selected; not the same as the softener option |
Model-specific checks
Choose one supported method
For the ball method, measure softener according to its label, seal the dispenser ball and place it on the load. Select Fabric Softener with Rinse Options. The guide also permits manual addition: select Fabric Softener before starting; during the final rinse, wait for filling to finish, pause, allow the lid to unlock, add the measured product, close the lid and hold Start/Pause to resume.
Read the rinse control
On this console one press selects Fabric Softener; two select Extra Rinse; three select both. Extra Rinse alone is a different selection. Check which indicator is illuminated before starting rather than assuming any rinse option activates softener handling.
If softener still remains
Confirm the selected method and correct final-rinse timing before blaming a missing dispenser pump. Follow the ball maker’s closure and dosage instructions. Do not pour softener into the bleach compartment. If the washer itself fails to rinse or unlock, troubleshoot that separate behavior instead of adding more softener.
What to record next
The useful distinction is between selecting the rinse and delivering the product. Conflicting retailer answers can send owners looking for a drawer this configuration does not have. Verify the console first; more detergent or softener will not create that hardware.
When to stop and get help
Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
