WTW5057LW Will Not Start: Hold, Watch the Lights, Then Release

Fixlume editorialSource check: October 16, 2026Whirlpool · washers
The short answer

Hold Start/Pause for one second until the status lights illuminate, then release. A quick tap is not the documented start action; a failed start after the correct action needs a different check.

Models covered

WTW5057LW with W11428540D quick-start console; not a universal Whirlpool button sequence.

Before you begin
Wait for motion to stop and the door or lid to unlock. Water may be hot. Isolate power and follow the exact manual before any user filter maintenance. Never open a filter against a full drum, force a lock or bypass an interlock.

Compare the behavior

Match the documented control, cycle or feature before interpreting the result. The comparison below keeps normal model behavior separate from an unresolved fault.

Model-specific checks

A controlled start attempt

Load the washer, close the lid and select a suitable cycle. Use the documented hold-and-release action once. Watch whether the status lights respond. This is an operating instruction, not entry to diagnostics, calibration or a hidden reset.

Keep three observations separate

No panel response, a panel that responds but never begins, and a machine that begins then stops are different cases. Write down which occurred and any displayed message. The one-second hold addresses the input action only; it does not prove the lid lock, fill system or drive works.

Pause is different

During a cycle the same control pauses operation. Unlocking can take longer when the basket is spinning. Wait for the actual unlock rather than pulling the lid when a timer expires. A repeatedly unresponsive or self-canceling washer needs model-specific service guidance, not increasingly long button holds.

What to record next

The lights provide feedback about the start input. Treat that feedback as a branch point: it is more useful than repeatedly unplugging the washer without recording what it did. A correct button action removes one possible operating error; it does not diagnose a component.

When to stop and get help

Only carry out maintenance permitted in your model’s manual. For service, note the full model number and suffix, displayed code, selected cycle and what happened during the checks. Leave internal wiring, gas components, pumps and safety devices to a qualified professional. A symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
